Schedule

Our Kindergarten Day begins at 8:45 and ends at 12:15. Part time Kindergartners come for class time and stay through lunch. Before and after school care is available from 7-8:45 and 12:15-6:00. Attendance is important in Kindergarten, as most of our activities are hands on, interactive learning activities. It is difficult for absent children to make up these learning experiences. Our Kindergarten class has 2 teachers and usually has 22 students.

8:45-9:15 Journal Time

Children write in journals and do reading and free writing activities when finished. Journal writing begins in September as dictation and progresses through the months to independent writing. Most children are writing short sentences by June using a combination of sight words, phonetic spelling, and dictionaries.

9:15 9:35 Circle Time

Circle time activities are lead by both Miss Shaynee and a weekly calendar helper. Activities include calendar, pocket charts and poems, language arts songs, and instruction for the days activities.

9:35-10:35 Rotations

Children divide into groups and are rotated between three tables - math, language arts, and self directed (children visit the self directed table each day, but they alternate between the math or language arts table every other day). The rotations last about 30 minutes each. Math and Language Arts are taught at a ratio of 1:5. Please see the appropriate pages for an explanation of these three tables.

10:35 -10:45 Wrap Up and Journal Sharing

We wrap up the morning activities, and each child is given a turn throughout the week to share a page in his/her journal.

10:45-11:15 Recess

11:15-12:00 Social Studies and Science

Monday-Thursday - Social Studies....we usually have a story/song/discussion about the theme of the month. We then do hands on activities to reinforce the subject learned. For example, when learning about dinosaurs we made paper mache eggs with dinos inside to reinforce the reptile/egg discussion, we put our shoes in a life sized dino footprint and measured the length of the biggest dino with string to reinforce size, we dug for "fossils" carefully in a cookie and made dino fossils with plaster of paris when talking about fossils and excavation, etc.

Friday - Science Friday......We pretend we are scientists (with a lab coat and science notebook) and we conduct hands on experiments including sink and float, magnetism, jet propulsion, inclined plane, forms of matter, etc. (This is one of our favorite days!!)

12:00-12:15 Daily News and Songs

Each day we write our Daily News. Three children are chosen to report news in their lives. We write it on chart paper using words, pictures, and stickers. At the end of the Daily News we count the number of our "letter of the week" that appear and count the number of sight words. We also use the news to reinforce one concept every day - number of words in the sentences, longest word, word with the most syllables, punctuation, spacing, etc. These lessons are meaningful and fun because they are done with their news. When we have written enough Daily News papers, each child gets to take one home.

12:15-1:15 Lunch and Recess

1:15-2:30 Rest Time

2:30-6:00 Afternoon Enrichment Program
