To our Dinosaur Unit

**new photos March 12th**

We first talked about how big the dinosaurs were.... we had a life size paper Diplodocus footprint...

we figured out that 27 of our feet would be able to fit in just one Diplodocus foot!

We also used a ribbon and pictures of dinosaurs to show how long they were. Miss Margaret held one end, and Miss Shaynee showed us how long several dinosaurs were. This picture is taken at about 35 feet... but we went all the way to 100 feet - the biggest dinosaur - the Ultrasaurus.

For our sensory table, we put in sand, rocks, plants, plastic dinosaurs, and dinosaur fossils (cleaned, bleached, and dried rib bones). The kids LOVE this choice!!!

We are also lucky enough to have some fun and neat dinosaur toys to play with!

We talked a lot about fossils, and finally we got to dig for fossils..... we used our chisels (toothpicks) and counted how many bone fragments (choc. chips) we could find in our rocks (cookies). We had to be very careful to make sure we didn't break any of our bones!!

Look at our dinosaur teeth.... we made them out of model magic, then used beads and made a dinosaur tooth necklace!

We talked about the fact that dinosaurs - like most reptiles - hatch from eggs.... we made dinosaur eggs with baby dinosaurs inside... when they are dry, we will get to take them home and "hatch" them. Then we need to report back to the class about what type of dinosaur was hatched, what time, what it will eat (plants or meat), where it will live in my house, etc.

The eggs are a mixture of sand, used coffee grounds, salt, flour, and water... the baby dinos inside are from toys r us.

To go along with our theme, Science friday this week was volcanoes!!!! We read Magic School Bus Blows It's Top, then had fun building our volcanoes out of dough. We each had a cup full of baking soda and a cup full of red vinegar, so we loved doing the eruptions over and over until our supplies ran out!
