Pocket Charts in September

Pocket charts are usually interactive with repetetive text. Children can change the words in one part of the sentences (the people in the Friends chart and the objects in the Buttons chart). We read these pocket charts each day, so within the first week or so the children are able to successfully manipulate and "read" them on their own (using our magic pointers of course!).

Birthday charts:

We use a pocket chart to sing the birthday song. We sing it the correct way, then we sing it changing all the beginning consonants to different letters....

Bappy Birthday Boo Boo......

I then let the kids mix up the bday song... the only rule is there have to be 4 words on each line. The kids use the visual clues to sing it the new silly way. This really helps to reinforce the concept that the printed word matches the spoken word, and that if you manipulate the words, you manipulate the language spoken.

Birthday happy birthday you.......

The first few weeks of school, we talked about our families and friends.

Here are some of our favorite activities:

*Me Paintings - we looked in a mirror and used multicultural paint to paint a self portrait

We talked about friendships... we drew a picture about the things we like to do with our friends, then took a polaroid with one of our Kindergarten friends.

*Things I Like Bulletin Board (to go with Things I Like book) - we read this great book (with simple text - easy to reread at choice time) and then we brainstormed things that we liked and made a class bulletin board

When we talked about our bodies and our bones, we made some neat skeletons out of q-tips.

*Family Big Books - We compiled pictures, drawings, and text and made a class big book showing all the families in our classes and what they liked to do together

For the letter Ff we made a Frosting Ff - yummy

Our favorite math activities:

**We start off the year talking about shapes. We went on a shape walk and looked for shapes out on the playground.

**We also made a shape book...."I used to be a circle, but now I am a (pizza). I used to be a square, but now I am a (t.v)."

Our favorite Language Arts Activities:

  Guess Can Game:

We match objects (hidden in the can) to the letters written on the back of the cards... this is much like a memory/concentration game

*We read the story, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and made our own coconut trees.... we used the ABC stamps to stamp our names on the trunks.

*We read the story Brown Bear, and we made our own innovation on the book. We used our friends names to re-do the story (Molly, Molly, who do you see? I see Jane looking at me). We loved this project, and using photos in combination with the names, we are able to reread this story independently!!

**We love journal time...here we are looking up words in our dictionaries and concentrating on our drawings.....

Our first Science Friday was "magnets"...... we experimented trying to pick up different objects with our magnets.... next week we will see what materials the magnetic force can pass through.
