What's the Scoop?
Friday, October 10th, 2003

Reading groups made a Triangle Guess Game (the kids call it a cootie catcher)..... We put numbers on the outside, and letters on the inside - then put stickers that begin with the letters under the flaps (have us show you!!!). We read the book, Chrysanthemum, by Kevin Henkes. We graphed the number of letters in our names, and we cut the letters in our names out of magazines. We also played bingo, and used spiders for our bingo markers. We listened to the story, Today Is Monday, by Eric Carle, and we made our own Eating Through the Week mini book (have us sing the song to you).

Math groups did three activities.
1 - They read the Cheerios Counting book, then used their sense of touch to figure out some tactile numbers. Some were soft and some were rough. We picked our favorite number and texture.
2 - They read Elephants Aloft. They tasted and graphed their favorite snack after talking about healthy and junk foods. The class favorite was - of course - a junk food snack... M&M's
3 - They read More or Less, and then played an apple game. The baskets were labeled with less, equal, and more. They also played a fun number game with playing cards and dice.

At the middle table (self directed) the groups made a Nuts Mini Book, Necklaces, our Telephone Numbers (we are saving them for telephone bingo next week), and Night Pictures.

In Social Studies we talked more about our bodies and healthy foods we eat. We read the story, The Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle, and we graphed the foods the caterpillars ate (healthy vs. unhealthy). We talked about the fact that we need to eat much more healthy food than junk food, and we looked through our lunch boxes to see if we had a healthy lunch. I did tell everyone that it is okay to eat a little "junk" food, but our body doesn't need it to grow and get energy, so we need to eat more healthy food. We also talked briefly about digestion, and how our food gives us energy. I think our favorite part of the whole week was learning that the food that our body doesn't need comes out in the potty!!!

Science Friday was a germs experiment. We passed around a potato with dirty hands, then washed our hands and passed around a potato with clean hands... we'll see what happens!!!

Reminders:

**Book orders are attached... they are due back next Thursday (the 16th) so we can have them back right before Halloween!!

**Please drop a Grandparent (or other relative's) address into the folder on the bulletin board or email us....we will be sending notes to our Grandparents for Gg week!!

**We are having trouble with book bags... they are staying out for a long time, and the children are disappointed that they cannot take one home...if you would please keep the book bags for only 2-3 days and then return them we would appreciate it. Also, book bag notes are left on top of the sign in sheets... please only take the bag if your child's name is on the list... we have had several children take a bag home when it wasn't their turn. Thanks in advance for your help.

**We already have the capsules done, but the things that go inside them can be brought in at any time in October. Make sure they are small enough to fit inside a Pringles can!!...for a sample please see our website under parent tips.
